The nuclear power industry is facing pressure to be financially competitive with to other forms of energy while at the same time facing pressure to increase safety following disasters like the one at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. These pressures can at times conflict with one another and have pushed the industry to seek new technologies that can both produce cost savings and increase overall safety.
H3D has focused on developing high-performance gamma-ray spectrometers and imagers that live at that intersection of safety and cost savings. H3D provides enhanced capabilities that can lead to safer operations at nuclear facilities while also helping facilities save time and money while performing their operations. H3D’s systems are based on 3D CZT technology that can provide gamma-ray spectroscopy on par with HPGe, while being more portable and reliable. This enables fieldable instruments that provide source term characterization in the field. H3D’s CZT technology is also capable of gamma-ray imaging to provide unique information as to the location of the gamma-ray sources, which can improve operations and the characterization of the radiation sources.
H3D has developed several instruments that are optimized for different applications in nuclear facilities. The primary instrument, the H-Series is designed for portable characterization of gamma-ray sources using both gamma-ray spectroscopy and imaging. In addition to this primary instrument, H3D has developed a permanent-mount spectrometer, the S-Series, that can be used to perform spectroscopy trending over time to characterize a single point or component and track how the radioactive source term changes. These instruments and others will be introduced, along with H3D’s software that can be used to further the analysis capabilities.
