Currently, a lot of rigid food and industrial packaging is made from Polystyrene. It can be transparent, rigid polystyrene for sweets or salads, expanded polystyrene (EPS) trays for meat packaging that can be found in supermarkets or boxes for fast food and cups for hot drinks.
Polystyrene contains styrene which has been under scrutiny from quite some time. In addition, the recyclability targets, which have been established by national and supranational authorities, call the packaging industry to react. The number of various plastics in the recycling stream has to be rationalized to make recycling more effective. Therefore, fast food packaging, polystyrene cups, as well as other “single use” food packaging made of polystyrene will be banned in the EU soon.
It is therefore time to look for an alternative material now. Polypropylene has made great improvements in becoming a polystyrene replacement and offers many amazing characteristics. As one of the world market leaders in Polypropylene, LyondellBasell advances innovation by expanding our Polypropylene property portfolio to meet the most demanding requirements of the packaging industry.
