The threat to friendly forces from UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems, often referred to as ‘drones’) incursion is growing on a near-daily basis. The proliferation of easy-to-fly, consumer-grade small drones with advanced capabilities is offering an inexpensive option for reconnaissance and direct strike capabilities to insurgent and criminal forces against a wide range of targets. Further, these small drones present unique and difficult technical challenges to detection and mitigation. Countering such a threat requires a layered, integrated approach in which a variety of sensor and effector modalities are brought to bear. Whether the asset to be protected is a fixed-site or requires rapid deployment capabilities, IEC Infrared Systems (IEC) has developed a system to counter these threats.

The asymmetric threat to friendly forces and locations posed by unmanned aerial systems is growing, due to rapid technological advances that are making inexpensive, easy to fly (and modify) craft available on the consumer level. In response to this threat, IEC Infrared Systems has created the Lycan and Wolfpack systems to address the needs of both fixed site and rapidly deployable applications. This paper has discussed the threats posed by different classes of targets, especially highlighting the difficulties presented by drones flying in the ‘low and slow’ domain that birds fly in, which create a highly cluttered environment that will distract and overwhelm operators.
IEC has developed a novel approach to this, using a machine-learning (heuristic) approach, optionally combined with a micro-Doppler radar to nearly eliminate this clutter. Analysis was presented to show that in scenarios involving representative drones in each Group, operators are easily provided with sufficient time to respond to the threat, before it can approach close enough to drop a payload.
