Trusted digital identity remains one of the main challenges of the internet today. Proving your online identity with digital credentials is not yet completely possible.
The heart of the problem is that we have no standard way to verify digital credentials. Currently, our identities are owned and controlled by other parties, some of whom we aren’t even aware of. But today something is changing:
• the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is defining the Verifiable Credentials standard, a format describing digitally signed credentials for digital identities;
• the Digital Ledger Technology hugely simplifies creation of decentralized services enabling an easier exchange of information about identities and related attributes;
• The European Commission proposed a new Regulation to create an European interoperable EU-ID, based on digital wallets and distributed technology.
Until now, our Internet identities have all been rooted on accounts. Account-based identity means there is always an intermediary in all our digital relationships. By moving to cryptographically-verifiable digital credentials, we can finally start proving our identity, attributes or relationships without intermediaries.
