Communicating your approach to sustainability – from addressing climate impacts to protecting the health and wellbeing of customers – can be challenging. According to the latest analysis by Bain, around 90% of brands do not embed sustainability frequently in their communications. And the beer market is significantly behind many other sectors, with 80% of the companies showing ‘low’ levels of communication on sustainable themes, including health, diversity and inclusion, waste, emissions, carbon, and water. So, by rectifying this, beer companies have a real opportunity to gain the competitive advantage, boost growth and win market share among a more enlightened consumer base.

Magali Deryckere is an associate partner in our Consumer Products and Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility practices, based in Brussels. She is one of our global CP-S&CR Interlock Champions, helping drive engagement at the intersection of the two practices.

Since joining Bain in 2011, Magali has led multiple consumer goods projects ranging from top-line acceleration, transformation, post-merger integration, operating model, and growth platforms. As of 2019, she has been focusing on sustainability projects with consumer goods players and has driven multiple of our core points of views on this topic: Sustainability in brands being one of the main articles she has contributed to.

Katie Hoard is AB InBev’s Global Senior Director of Sustainability and ESG based in Leuven, Belgium. In her role, Katie is responsible for the global strategy to achieve the company’s Smart Agriculture 2025 Goal, working with Procurement and Supply teams to build resilient, responsible agricultural supply chains globally through partnerships and the development of innovative solutions. Additionally, she works closely with AB InBev’s Global Finance team on Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) engagement and disclosure. Prior to joining AB InBev, Katie worked in politics and commodities regulation in Washington, DC.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Finance from the University of Arkansas, a Master’s degree in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics, and an MBA from Columbia Business School in New York.

Former Master Brewer in managerial roles at Carlsberg, the Jacobsen Brewhouse, Molson Coors Brewing Company, Royal Unibrew, Novozymes & Carlsberg Research Laboratory.

Jens joined DuPont – now IFF Health & Biosciences - in 2018 and in his current role, as Global Product Manager for Brewing & Distilling, he focuses on innovation and sustainability solutions - using enzymes to support our customers in the brewing and distilling industry to improve the sustainability and efficiency of their processes.

Jens has received medals for his beer innovations. Jens is also an author, co-author and contributor to books and articles about beer, including – for example - the “Oxford Companion to Beer” and “The Naked Beer – The book about Pilsner. In addition, he developed a learning App for iPhones called “Brewers Hops. He was Technical editor of the Scandinavian Brewers’ Review for 7 years. Judge at the World Beer Cup. Member of the Danish Academy of Gastronomy.
