Dr. Mellmann will report about his experience in doing prospective genomic surveillance of multidrug-resistant bacteria in a hospital setting for more than 10 years. He will cover changes in sequencing technology, bioinformatic tools, and health economic aspects of his work. Finally, he will talk about the most recent improvements of long-read whole genome sequencing and tools for detecting plasmid transmissions in real-time.
Key Learning Objectives
- Acquire an understanding of laboratory technology aspects of whole genome sequencing of bacteria
- Acquire an understanding of bioinformatic aspects of whole genome sequencing of bacteria
- Understand the concepts of genomic surveillance for detection of clonal and plasmid transmissions
- Understand the advantages and disadvantages of doing genomic antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiling
